A pair of brilliant sundogs framed the winter sun over a snowy field near Star Lake the frigid morning of Dec. 29.
Sundogs, or parhelia, form when sunlight refracts through ice crystals in the upper atmosphere, creating bright spots of light that often appear on either side of the sun—especially on frigid winter days. The term “sundog” is believed to come from the Greek word parēlion, meaning “beside the sun.”
