Behind the brush: Pelican students share their creative process before works head to competition

Isaiah Ballard created this “Charcoal Drawing of a Soldier” because he had mainly worked in watercolor and acrylics and wanted to try his hand at charcoal. 
Ballard explained that the process is the opposite of what you would expect: you put down charcoal on a blank sheet of paper and use an eraser to create the work. 
“It took more than five hours total,” Ballard said. “I wanted to try it since it was something new.” 
The freshman says he plans to work in culinary arts after he graduates, but will create artwork as a hobby.
